my greatest fear in life was the painting center. but i introduced it to two students at a time, methodically going through the process of putting on an apron, removing the lids from the paint and storing them with the bottle of paint in the corresponding color; then we talked about the brushes and caring for them; then we learned how to hang the paper with the clips. after painting the masterpiece, we showed the children how to hang their painting to dry, how to clean up the centers, replace the lids, wash the brushes and wipe down the plastic aprons. also, instead of pouring the paint directly into the paint cup, i lined the paint cup with a plain sandwich bag and poured the paint into the bag. clean up is a cinch once the paint is gone or dried in the bag. just take the lid off, remove the bag and replace it with a new one!
